Having a
writer-in-residence for your school or classroom is a unique experience
for your students. One-day author visits and writing workshops are
great but a residency gives the students the chance to work one-on-one
with a published author on a longer project and gives them a real feel
of the writing business. I have done 4 week and 8
week residencies as well as year-long ones. I have done them in person
and via email. It depends on what you would like to accomplish. Some
schools like to use a short residency to help students prepare for
their own young authors events. In my longer residencies with at-risk
students I have concentrated on getting them comfortable with
expressing themselves in words using a variety of methods.
Beginning with
poetry and continuing with a variety of
exciting writing exercises and activities, students will develop their
oral and
written language skills while exploring their creative and artisic
abilities.
Through the use of both individual and collaborative projects as well
as
presentations, students will learn how to better communicate not only
with one
another, but with themselves. This literary and artisic journey is
designed to
build self-esteem and create a belief in themselves and their ability
to
achieve what they can conceive. Long-term residencies will offer the
opportunity to compile a literacy portfolio filled with examples of
student
growth. Whenever possible students will be instructed and encouraged to
illustrate their work using both traditional and non-traditional art
forms.
Possible projects
include:
Poetry
anthology |
Public poetry readings |
Write and illustrate picture book |
Self-portraits – both written and
illustrated

Homeschool
Virtual
Writer-in-Residence
Just because you
homeschool your children doesn't mean they should miss out on being
able to have their own writer-in-residence. The programs that I have
done via email with traditional classrooms will work just as well with
homeschoolers. Give your homeschooler(s) the opportunity to
work with a published author by having a Virtual Writer-in-Residence.
Via email (or snail mail if you prefer) we will go over basic story
structure,
have fun with word play, and increase their writing ability. I adapt
this program to your specific needs so we could run a one month
residency or longer.
You can download my brochure which is available in PDF form. In order
to view the PDF you will need the free Adobe Reader which you can get here.
